My Students

With so much technology available students are forgetting what it is like to actually read a book with real pages. Holding onto the idea of flipping a real page, the smell of the fresh book powder as it rises from the pages should be relished by all ages.

My students are active 6th graders.

They are very much into sports. They live in a town of 10,000 people and live and die for Friday Night football games. Many are farmers and factory workers who tend to never look beyond their reach right here at home. Most feel their future is only down the road at the nearest factory entrance. I want to teach them that their is a world and experience beyond their front door.

My Project

My students need 100 individual copies of Number the Stars so they do not have to share a copy, they can take their copy home to use, they can make notes in the margins. By allowing my students to receive their very own copy of the book "Number the Star" they will have the opportunity to experience events outside their sheltered little town. They can begin to feel and understand how the Holocaust effected so many lives, including the lives of kids their own age. With this purchase each student will get to keep their very own copy. For some of them it may be the first book they have ever owned. It could inspire them to pick up more books and encourage younger siblings to read as well. By having their own copy students will have the ability to take the book home and read at Thier own pace. They can make notes in the margins and use these notes as reference as well.

By allowing my students to have their own copy of the book, they are able to read at their own pace.

Many of my students struggle at reading and can't always keep up with class. By having their own copy they can take it home, use it with tutor, or intervention specialist. They can use it to begin their own library, add to their already existing library or pass it on to another student or sibling in need of a wonderful classic.
