My Students
The special needs students that I work with have motor skill challenges, and they are often unable to communicate their thoughts and feelings due to delays with speech and language skills. Therapeutic art projects address their motor skills and help them express themselves in a positive way.
Special students in Tennessee receiving occupational therapy services who are diagnosed with conditions including cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, developmental delays, and autism will participate in this project.
My students are eager to work and improve their skills in any way possible, and they love having fun!
My Project
Special Kids Helping Special Kids is a project to be carried out by special needs students with support from regular education peer tutors, classroom staff, and the school occupational therapist. With support, these special students will create therapeutic art projects that exercise motor skills while providing tactile, visual, sensory, & social stimulation. The completed projects will be original multimedia paintings that the students will sell online to raise money for the cancer patients at a local children's hospital.
The special needs students will gain functional skills that can be used for future employment, such as improved fine motor skills, artistic expression, counting money, interacting with typical peers, using language.
The regular education peer tutors will learn valuable life skills, such as patience, empathy, supportiveness, and understanding. Additionally, the patients at the children's cancer hospital will benefit from the money raised by the project.
