Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A wise man once said "A man who reads has lived a thousand lives, while the man who does not has lived just one". I want to give my current and future students the chance to live a new life through a class reading of the novel "Coraline" by Neil Gaiman.
My school has the unique position of being both a school which brings in students from the neighborhood and has a magnet program which brings in students from very far away.
This creates a very unique student demographic. I have students that read on the first grade level and students that read on the twelfth grade level. We also have a very large population of English language learners and students receiving free or reduced priced lunch. Student do not have many books at home, and count on the school to provide them with the resources to read. We are also part of the International Baccalaureate program, which means we focus on teaching students respect and appreciation of other people and cultures.
My Project
Most people with a love of literature learned this love through discussions of books together in English class. With my unique classroom, it is difficult to find a book that we can all read and enjoy together. Thankfully, I know Coraline is this book. It is an exciting and action packed story which has broad appeal to all middle school students. It is simple enough to be approached by low readers, but complex enough to challenge my more advanced readers. I hope to use this novel to guide a group of class discussions. I want to see my students learn to discuss literature together and bring their ideas and insights to the attention of others. I want to see them take part in the high level thinking that such a discussion requires and use this thinking to develop a deeper understanding of the text. In turn, I think this will lead to students developing an appreciation and love of literature.
By funding this project, you will be helping students have the chance to interact with a great text.
You will also allow all of my students to have the chance to have the same great high level discussion of literature that you remember from school. You will not not only be allowing students to possibly find a favorite new book, but to develop important reading and interaction skills that will lead to a lifelong love of reading.
