My Students

In these tough economic times there is little money to provide students with new updated literature such as "Hunger Games" or "The Fourth Stall," and purchase new books to replace existing stock. All students deserve the right to read rich authentic literature that will captivate and "hook" them.

We are part of a public school district in upstate New York.

Our school is a Title 1 school. My students come from many different back grounds. Each have different opportunities. Together we "escape" reality during out books discussions each week where we discuss concepts such as hope, empowerment, courage, struggle, and determination. We have read several novels this year, but the number of books at my disposal for book discussions are limited. My students thirst for rich literature!

My Project

The materials that have been selected would bolster and "fresh blood" my deteriorating classroom library. I have requested several copies of the books to engage students in rich discussion of literature where we focus on higher-ordered thinking skills. Students, through literature groups, hone their inference skills and vocabulary development. This will have a direct impact on student achievement and continue to fan their love of reading.

As a literacy teacher I know the importance of providing students with the opportunity to read literature at their instruction reading levels.

This helps challenge them into applying the skills being taught in the classroom in their reading to become stronger students. Many skills can be taught through good authentic literature with a motivated teacher and donors such as yourself.
