My Students

Ever get lost in a book? I have! I want to expose my fourth grade language arts students to really great literature, so I started something I call "Book Chat." Book Chat is a weekly literature discussion group that encourages critical thinking and the love of books.

My school has three fourth grade classes.

I teach language arts to all of them. However, with over 75 amazing students in my fourth grade, it is difficult to obtain enough copies of current books. Our school does not have extra money to purchase the books for my program, so I am always seeking ways to obtain them.

My Project

I want to include a book called "The Lions of Little Rock" in my book chat collection. It is a brand new book by Kristin Levine. Book Chat is a great time to read historical fiction novels. It's wonderful to be able to teach a bit of history as you are enjoying the story. This book will allow me to do just that! It's about two girls who are separated by race and form an unbreakable bond during the tumultuous integration of Little Rock schools in 1958. Wow! How could my students resist?

During the last several years, I have had so many parents tell me that this program has turned their reluctant readers into book lovers or given their ravenous readers a new favorite book!
