Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor...

My students need funding for transportation to attend a class trip to Ellis Island, the aculminating event of our school's Freedom Project. The school has raised the majority of the funds for the trip, but we need this final leg of funding.

My Students

Have you been to Ellis Island? Have you stood on the same ground as immigrants from Europe, Asia and Africa as they looked across the waters of the NY harbor to see the Statue of Liberty? We want to give our students that experience of discovering the wonder of freedom and the genius of America.

The students at my school live in a rural area with 52% of our students on free and reduced lunches.

Within our S.S. curriculum and our residencies, the overall essential question is "What is Freedom?" Our students are learning about the many freedoms we enjoy and how that contrasts with other regions of the World. Third grade is learning about Ghana and the opportunities that are provided and the others that are not. In fourth grade students are learning about the importance of the Erie Canal and how the building of it brought many opportunities and freedoms to Americans. The fifth grade is learning about the trials and tribulations many of their ancestors went through coming to America. Why they left and the freedoms that America offered. All three residencies provide an important look into our history so our students may thoroughly understand that the freedoms we enjoy now were not just given to us. We had to sacrifice and need to protect them in order to pass them onto our children.

My Project

The residency concludes with a culminating event called, "Ellis Island Day". The gymnasium is turned into the Great Hall at Ellis Island. The students dress as immigrants, experience what it was like to go through registration, be examined for diseases, exchange monies, buy train tickets, and deportation. Over the years, this program has grown into an inspiring and highly successful educational unit, a model, for Arts-In-Education. This year we want to raise the bar even higher by taking the entire fifth grade to Ellis Island. For many students, this might be the only time they get a chance to see the world that lies behind the borders of their home community or step inside a museum. For others, this might be the inspiration that keeps them in school, ignites their passion for learning and inspires them to become a better student. Perhaps, an even more compassionate, tolerant individual.

We believe this unique educational experience is a substantive, educational component to our students' learning.

This is a wonderful ending to a three year, multi-disciplinary, theater based residency program that our students will remember for the rest of their lives.
