My Students

"We need to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world" is the quote from President Obama that I recite to kick-off my high school engineering class. My students are truly motivated to make that need a reality.

We are a small charter school in Minnesota that attracts students who, for many reasons, do not fit into the standard large district school system.

In our community based setting with small class sizes and engaged teachers these students are allowed to be themselves and thrive. We have farm kids, former home-schoolers, quiet kids, "geeky" kids, and kids who are just looking for a place they can feel safe and supported.

My Project

Nothing gets my students more excited then the chance to build rockets in engineering. Besides "can we blow things up" it is the most common request. This year, with the help of donors choose (and you) I hope to honor that request. They will research, design and build a water bottle rocket to reach the highest altitude while also returning an egg in the nose cone safely back to Earth.

I am positive that this will get even the most reluctant learner to be engaged.

They will learn through doing. The will implement the design and engineering process which will help spark the kind of curiosity, innovation and scientific interest that President Obama is asking for us to instill in our students.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
