Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school, despite years of building peace and emphasizing citizenship, is filled with violence, ugly words and bullying. My third grade students come back daily with tales of being victims of bullying. But they have also started retaliating and becoming bullies as well. Let's turn this around!

My third graders are brilliant, dedicated students.

Many are multi-lingual. Nearly half are African American, half are Latino, and one is American Indian. They love learning and focused on getting Advanced on their standardized tests in the Spring. Our school is in an extremely high-poverty neighborhood with a high incidence of violent crimes. Many times, our school goes into "lock-down" due to criminal activities in the neighborhood. Our students bring much of that anxiety and conflict into the school ground. As a school, we have spent years on conflict resolution and building peace, to little avail. Parents in our neighborhood, in order to protect their children from the violence around them, have taught the children to fight back and hit harder, perpetrating the violence, rather than resolving conflicts in a peaceful manner. In turn, many of our students become the aggressors, bullies, and the rest become victims of hate language and physical violence

My Project

I would like to change this for the students in our classroom and in our school with a video blogging project aimed at teaching students to reflect on bullying and becoming change agents in our school to stop bullying. With three video/ wifi capable Tablet PCs, my students will create a private classroom blog to reflect on their learning as they study the book "Bullying in Schools". As students study, they will be able to respond to thoughtful questions posted by me or other students through typing or recording a video of themselves discussing their response. They will be able to respond to fellow students response, just like in real life blogs. They will be able to post "I got bullied" video anecdotes as well as "I was a bully" confessions. They will also be able to scroll through other students' videos and confessions as they contemplate their roles. Finally, we will take these videos and reflections, create a movie, and share with the school to encourage a bully-free zone.

This video blogging project to examine bullying in our school and our roles as bullies and victims will bring peace and respect to not only my classroom, but may also help to change our school, to end playground violence, put-downs, and violent retaliation.

This project will help my students to become aware of and use peaceful conflict resolution, and as change agents, they will help bring peace to the playground. Please support our goal of having a Bully Free Zone.
