Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the great chapter books you read as a kid? I do and I want to expose my students to these same chapter books. I want them to get excited to select grade level chapter books, enjoy reading, and have the feeling of accomplishment from completing several of these books.

My class is made up of thirty one fourth grade students.

There are 16 boys and 15 girls in the class. We are a unique group in that we have been together for three years. They enjoy reading the grade level anthology, but love reading chapter books. They make each day fun, enjoyable, interesting and challenging.

My Project

I am requesting class sets of chapter books including, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, The Fantastic Mr. Fox. and Frindle. There are many good reasons for using literature in the classroom. Literature is authentic material. Students need to be exposed to this source of unmodified language in the classroom because they need to acquire the skills to deal with difficult or unknown language. Literature also encourages interaction. Literary texts are often rich with multiple layers of meaning, and can be effectively mined for discussions and sharing ideas and opinions. Lastly, literature is great for expanding language awareness and truly motivating students.

These chapter books will have a tremendous impact in my students lives.

They will get my students excited about reading. It is while reading chapter books that I have seen students of all reading levels most engaged, asking me "Can we read a little more?" It is what every teacher wishes for and wants; all students engaged, motivated and learning.
