My Students

"Music Alone Shall Live" is one of my favorite songs to teach children. My students face difficult times, but they know when they come to music class, it's all going to be o.k., at least for 45 minutes. The music room is a sanctuary for many students.

Black, white, rich, poor, hungry, full, 2 parents, 1 parent, incarcerated parents, non-incarcerated parents.

All of these describe the students of my school. We have a high low-income population and subsequently we have a high at risk population of students. My students are all kind and loving. We have an active PTA, but not a rich PTA. Our school's PTA cannot afford to fund as many projects of other schools. Therefore, I am looking for alternate ways to fund the music program.

My Project

The xylophone materials will enable more children to experience the joy of playing a pitched percussion instrument every day. I see 120 students a day, and getting all of those students on xylophones for an extended period is near impossible. I use a unique circle formation of instruments to allow students to rotate through instruments so that every class they can play pitched percussion, drum, and rhythm instruments. This is their only musical experience for most students. Classrooms are so pressured by standardized test materials that the classroom teacher's don't have time for the arts. So, my 45 minute music class every week is the only time the students get to explore their musical side.
