This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you ever read a book that changed your life? Unfortunately, my struggling readers have yet to share in that wonderful experience.

My students are sixth through eighth graders who lack the necessary reading skills to not only succeed in their classes, but to fall in love with reading.

They want to do well and are motivated by their own progress. The majority are English learners. Our school is a span school serving students from pre-school to eighth grade. It is located in a largely Hispanic, transient community where about twenty one percent of the population lives below the poverty level.

My Project

It is no secret that reading ability is a high predictor for success. When students fall behind in their reading skills, it is very difficult to bridge that gap. This is especially true once students reach middle school. Fortunately, twenty years of research have brought about "Read 180". This comprehensive reading program is composed of high interest reading material at various levels to engage middle school students, while meeting their reading needs. In order to fully implement this program, students need headsets with microphones to interact with the Read 180 software.

Please help these students understand the joy of reading by giving them full access to a reading program that will improve their skills.

After all, one cannot place a dollar amount on the the ability to read.
