This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember earning an allowance, saving it, then counting it over and over again? Counting coins is an important part of understanding the value of money.

My class of first grade students is eager to learn about everything.

They are curious and enjoy hands-on exploration. They like interacting with each other, and benefit from the opportunity to work and play with each other. Playing games is a great way to cooperate with and learn from peers.

My Project

Whenever I take out the coins for the students to explore, sort, and count, they are always excited. Games spark and engage students in a different way. I have used games to teach and reinforce skills, and have borrowed games from fellow teachers, but have never had enough for the entire class to play at the same time! It is hard to wait for a turn to play while still focusing on another assignment. Having enough Allowance Game boxes will provide an opportunity for the entire class to play at the same time. They will have fun learning without thinking of it as work.

We all know how important money is in our lives.

Understanding the value of money and managing money are skills that can be taught to first graders. My students need opportunities to use coins in a "real world" setting to gain a better understanding of how money is used in everyday life.
