Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you had your teacher read your story to the class? Remember the excitement and pride you felt when you had your fellow classmates applaud your hard work! My students have not had the pleasure of creating stories and illustrations with tools other than crayons.

Most of my students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and qualify for free lunch programs.

They are in my gifted/accelerated program because they have shown good potential and are driven to work hard. They have a great desire to learn and create. Unfortunately, many of them don't have the tools at home to inspire their creativity.

My Project

In today's economic climate the arts are the first programs to suffer cutbacks. Arts are a great way to inspire kids! Arts are one of the few areas where self-expression can be shared without critique or judgment. It's one of the last bastions of free-expression. There is no right or wrong! Students can feel free to express their feelings and opinions without fear of criticism. The project I have assigned for my students is to create their own folktale with their own characters, settings, and dialog. They will be taught how to use art mediums outside of the traditional paper and crayon. I will teach students how to use their tool kits to create watercolor and oil pastel drawings. Armed with these skills, the students will be able to take their artist tool kits home and work on illustrating their folktales in their pop-up books.

Learning how to express your feelings and your opinions is a life skill.

It is important for students to learn how to express themselves in a healthy creative manner. They need a creative outlet in which they can feel free to share with others without fear of criticism. Folktales have been passed on through generations. Stories have been created through time to teach us life lessons. The kids will be able to partake in an age old skill of story telling.
