Genetics Labs: What Would Their Baby Look Like?

My students need 5 classroom kits and 2 slide sets to help them learn about genetics and cellular reproduction in a visual and tactile way.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What do you remember most about science class? Chances are what you remember most were the Labs! Please help make science fun and engaging for my students with lab activities that illustrate the relevancy of genetics and cell biology to teenagers.

Our school serves students in grades 8-12 who have not experienced academic success in a traditional school setting.

Some of my students have previously dropped out of school, some are behind in grade by more than one year, some are new to the United States, some are teen parents, some juggle work and school, some have had major discipline issues, and most of them live below the poverty line. Our purpose as teachers is to meet these students at their ability level and build them up until they graduate or are back on track with their peers at the high school. Because of past negative experiences in education, many of our students require extra support academically and socially to keep them engaged and driven to reach their post-secondary goals.

My Project

Your donation to fund genetic labs will help my students understand the complexity and awesome processes of life. The genetics and cell reproduction resources that I am requesting are classroom kits and microscope slide sets that minimize consumable materials and are usable class after class, year after year. First of all, my students will be able to use the microscope slides to visualize how cells divide by comparing plant and animal cells undergoing mitosis and meiosis. Second, they will be able to extract their own DNA from cheek cells so that they can better visualize the abstract concept of the DNA molecule within chromosomes. Third, the students will be able to create a variety of Punnett Squares to determine probabilities for making healthy babies. Finally, the students will be able to analyze mutations in karyotypes in the same way doctors test for abnormalities in infants.

Since many of the students live below the poverty line, much of our school's budget goes toward providing basic educational necessities like paper, pens, and pencils.

This leaves little to no money to fund fun lab activities that make science memorable. The genetics lab resources will encourage my students to keep coming to school. Please consider donating to this project. Bring biology to life for students who need a second chance at obtaining their essential education
