This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our middle schoolers love learning about Self-Defense but we haven't had the best equipment to practice upon. These punching gloves will get them more excited to start punching the mats this spring, and remove the possibility of big injuries.

Our student population is nearly 100% Latino kids from hard-working families who have very little extra money to spend on extra-curricular activities for their kids.

My P.E. class often introduces them to activities and sports that they have never before experienced, and sometimes have never even seen. Self-Defense is one of the more fun activities that the kids like to try, along with Badminton, Ping-Pong, Shuffleboard and Bowling. The P.E. spaces are old and small (gyms from the 1940's) so I often have to find activities a class of 60 can do in a smaller space.

My Project

The boxing gloves are soft and well-padded, providing a much safer experience for my students to try their first attempts at punching mats. Their fists will be well protected, which will then give all the students more courage to try harder and really put some sweat into their punches while still keeping them safe throughout the work-out. The students learn four different punches during the unit--jab, uppercut, hook and the hammer fist--as well as different ways to block incoming punches. We then learn to pair our punches with various kicks to give our students a basic level of defense that should help them in the real world.

Our school isn't in the safest area of the city as it is surrounded by large industrial buildings, parking lots and alleyways, by which our students have to pass when they walk to school.

We are also in an area of heavy gang presence, though most all of my students are not associated. I teach Self-Defense to give them extra protection as they go about their lives because navigating middle school is hard enough, but braving the obstacles outside can make coming to school daily a real challenge.
