Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher and a parent of young children, I can tell you this fact: children who have too much free time on their hands tend to find things to do that get them into trouble. Students who play games during their recess time don't get into as much trouble for bullying type behavior.

My second graders are a wonderful group this year.

They work together and they care about each other. However, even though they are friends, I pick them up from lunch almost every day to a chorus of tattling and complaining: "He hit me! She was making fun of me! They wouldn't play with me!" Playgrounds tend to be where children are supervised the least, which leads to negative behavior, like bullying.

My Project

I have requested a playground game book, books about good manners and safety on the playground, and books about bullying, including bullying on the playground. I would like to use these books to begin discussions about how to behave and how to handle problems on the playground. I have also requested playground equipment, including pinnies (vests you wear to indicate which team you are on), pop up goals, different types of balls, and double dutch ropes. I hope we can use these materials to give students something positive to do during their free time and for positive team-building. Each of the materials I requested can only be used by 2 or more students.

If students learn how to play games and have fun together, they'll hopefully get along better, which will decrease the amount of negative behavior on the playground.

With your support, my students will get these supplies and will be on their way to becoming positive members of their school community.
