This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Is math challenging for you? Do you wonder how math and life relate? By reading these novels, you will be able to see how math can be found in life and see how math can relate to you.

My students attend Van Nuys MS.

They are a group of energetic students who are eager to see the connection between academic content and real life matters. Math is one of the most challenging subjects to see that connection in; so by reading math fiction novels, I hope to bridge that connection.

My Project

I am requesting 40 copies of "Secrets, Lies and Algebra" as well as 40 copies of "Writing on the Wall." The author of the books has created material that promotes discussion and critical thinking. I plan to use these materials to help students understand the multiple meanings math terms have, especially when it comes to real life matters. At the end, I hope students can find the value of math and not view it as an abstract subject they see no use for.

My project is important because it merges reading and math.

Not only do students get to work on their reading skills, but it also helps students with their vocabulary knowledge of math by seeing it used in real life contexts. I hope to help students develop the love of math that I have.
