iPods in the classroom: The "Revolution" is here and we need to be preparing even the youngest of learners!
My 2nd grade students, known as the Weckies at our school in Michigan, represent a diverse group of learners.
Our school and district have faced several financial cuts over the past few years and as a result, technology across the district as taken a MAJOR hit. While we want to prepare our students to thrive in a society where nearly everything may happen on mobile devices, we have lost the desktops in our classrooms and can only spend a limited time block a week in our school computer lab. 30 Computer Lab computers for 500+ kids can be a large problem.
My Project
In our classroom we have been blessed with grant money for a SmartBoard and use it daily! While the board provides a great enhancement for instruction for the whole group, it is often times difficult to manage having individual or groups of students work on the board at different times. With the incorporation of two Apple iPod Touches, students would be able to use this equipment with partners and in small groups. There are thousands of applications available (many for free) that can: differentiate instruction, meet the individual needs of students, expose our children to the mobile devices, use Mathematics Apps directly from our Everyday Math Curriculum and beyond! I have had the chance firsthand to watch how engaged in learning the Weckies can be when the use of technology is incorporated into their every day routine.
This project means so much to me and my Weckies because it will not simply give us a new "electronic" toy, it will provide us with a connection to the technological society I want to prepare these young minds for!
We'll be able to use the touches to blog, record presentations, use educational applications and beyond! Please help make this BIG DREAM come true for this year's class and those to come to my room in the future! Thank you.
