Can I Use Your Computer?

My students need a netbook and mouse to increase their learning opportunities.

My Students

Was the computer that you use on a daily basis "born" before you were? My students can answer yes to that question. Each of them were born in either 2005 or 2006, and our computer is dated 2004.

I have 20 bright and vibrant Kindergarten students.

They love to learn and love technology. I have eleven fabulous girls and nine super boys. They are quick learners and do their best to learn as much as they can. I can also say that they are very respectful of our materials and try hard to keep them organized and working well. Even though we live in a small, rural community, I have two students who are nonnative speakers and who primarily do not speak English at home. My other eighteen students are quick to help those two and want to learn a different language as well. Our school is over 60% free and reduced lunch based upon the poverty level. Many of my students do not have a computer at home. They can only access one at the local library or at school. I am always amazed at how quickly they can figure out the computer and how they can log themselves onto different programs using usernames and passwords. They truly want and need to learn.

My Project

Our school has provided wonderful wonderful resources for them to use such as Ticket to Read and IXL math. However, the school has only provided one student computer and one teacher computer for my classroom. The students usually use my computer with the Promethean board leaving just the one student computer for independent work. I feel that the Kindergarten year is crucial for learning, and my students have such a range of abilities. An additional computer would let them have so much more individualized instruction. They could learn without being frustrated and have fun while they are doing it. A netbook would be just the right size for small hands. I have requested a mouse with a cord instead of a cordless mouse so it will be easier for the students to use. It won't accidentally end up somewhere else in the room. The possibilities that can be opened with an additional computer are almost limitless.

Donations to this request will fund resources that will set youngsters on the right path for the rest of their school career.

They come to Kindergarten eager to learn and will leave with the same excited attitude toward school because they were able to learn at their own pace and to be successful. My students will remember these days for the rest of their lives.
