Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

With attention and sensory difficulties, children with autism face several challenges in accessing the curriculum. These are not children with a disability; they have been found to have a great ABILITY to utilize technology when it is available. Please help make that technology available to them.

Havoline & Alamo (2007) state that, "Individuals with ASD demonstrate great variability in their behaviors, skills, preferences, functioning, and learning needs that change as they grow." (p.3) I have a wonderful group of diverse K-1 children with autism.

No day is the same and they amaze me with their progress and variety of ABILITIES. But, as mentioned above, learning needs change. I transferred to this campus a year ago and was given the opportunity to open this new class of K-1 students with autism. My class is located in a low income area, on a campus that up until six years ago was solely a special education center. Thanks to the addition of general education classrooms, my students have the opportunity to thrive socially through their integration with general education students, but continue to change in their educational needs and the approaches required to help them meet their goals.

My Project

I am requesting a Tablet and two LeapFrog Leapsters for use with my students, as several have demonstrated an ability to thrive through the use of the computer and directed instruction. Many students with ASD are tactile, and the ability to manipulate and use a Tablet and Leapster provides them with an opportunity to access a variety of learning modalities unlike use of a desktop computer. When I have had an opportunity to borrow and implement interactive books and programs utilizing a tablet, I have observed an increase in attention and retention of information. Utilizing these devices also give the students an opportunity to work collaboratively, learn to share, and take turns which at times can be difficult for students with ASD.

I hope that through this project you will assist me in providing my students with an opportunity to experience education through varied modalities.

The ability for my students to access interactive books and programs will enrich their lives and provide them with an educational experience that may help them become socially and educationally successful. My students have shown me that they are truly Hi-Tech Autis-Tech children when given the opportunity. Thank you.
