Calculator Skills Oh My!!

My students need 30 calculators in order to gain the skills for using this technology. Our students must have them before they can learn to use them.

My Students

What if you never learned to use a calculator? In our highly technological world we still need basic skills. On our state tests students may use calculators on parts of the tests. They need to learn the skills before they can do the work.

My students attend a small rural school where we have 96% of the students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.

We have other forms of technology ,but not the basic calculator. State tests allow use of the calculator on parts of the test. I would like to teach my students how to use the calculator. In order to do this we would require having the students have the same calculator to start with. Every skill no matter how basic helps students with daily life skills for the rest of their lives. Some of our children rarely leave our rural county. I hope to prepare them for life where ever they may choose to live.

My Project

Calculator skills are used every time we balance a checkbook. What more of a basic skill could we as adults need. Yes, we now use our smartphones as calculators and likely our students will too if they are taught the skills. Our technology is running away with us when we can use one gadget to do so many things. If I fail to teach our next generation basic skills where may we end up? We will have adults with smart devices that are outsmarting them. With a set of 30 primary calculators, my students will be able to check their daily math work , and they will be able to use the calculators on the state tests they will take in May. I will be able to use theses calculators for many years which will help thousands of children over the upcoming years.

I am faced with teaching all kinds of state required courses.

I also feel I need to teach skills in which I see as an area of need. Today we used another classroom's calculators to check division problems. Students didn't know where to start in using them. The calculators were not the same , so they had trouble following what I was trying to teach them.
