Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every student has the ability to learn when given the opportunity and appropriate materials. My group includes students that do not have expressive language skills requiring us to use various tools, including pictures, manipulatives, and a curriculum not provided by the district.
We have 5 fabulous boys to nurture and teach.
As is common for children with autism, our boys lack empathy, social skills, language, life skills, and fine and gross motor skills. These are all things those not afflicted with autism spectrum disorder do not often think about.
My Project
Anytime our students can have a visual aid or a sensory component to a lesson, they are able to make a connection and become invested in their learning. There is no doubt that when given the appropriate materials, these boys will thrive and become excited by their achievements.
My students need a photo library, discovery kits, magnetic story board, and other hands-on tactile learning materials. Science is fun and teachable with Lakeshore discovery kits. Counting and number association are goals we've set for our students, and the Lakeshore manipulatives will support the students in reaching these goals. Often our boys are seen as not being able to learn, and it brings us great joy when we prove that all children can learn.
Each day we struggle to meet the various needs of our students.
We are in a district where basic survival is a challenge. For our students on the severe end of the spectrum, surviving is beyond what any of us can comprehend. Being able to provide a safe learning environment with useful teaching tools is the least we can do for our children.
