It Should Be Better Now: Ending Bullying

My students need "Bullying in Schools," and a library of accompanying books, in order to investigate and challenge the processes of marginalization that lead to bullying. The titles include the Hunger Games series and the Harry Potter series, plus biographies, like "Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez."

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kids should not have to wait until adulthood to feel safe to be who they are. But how do we eliminate bullying in a middle school classroom? I believe that process starts with an honest exploration of who is excluded in society, and how to challenge those exclusions.

I teach a self-contained special education class in a small middle school in the Bronx.

Although all of the schools in our Congressional district, which is the poorest in the country, are under incredible strain right now, you would not know it if you walked into our room. My kids are dynamic, curious, and highly motivated. They are deeply invested in our advisory discussions about the root causes of conflict and violence. Now, they need tools to understand and confront these issues.

My Project

I am requesting a library of books, both novels and works of non-fiction, that explore themes of marginalization and inclusion. During our Advisory period, we will read and discuss "Bullying in Schools." After our conversations, students will read about and discuss stories of people who have confronted bullying at an inter-personal and societal level.

This library addresses issues that are often left out of the classroom.

There are guide books for immigrant teens as well as for young children. There are stories about young people who are plus-size and proud, who creatively confront poverty, and who find strength in supposed disability. There are also honest depictions of the ways in which teens and adults are targeted because they belong to these populations. In these stories, my students will discover that bullying need not be the status quo.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
