My students need copies of their online textbook, worksheets, and other printed materials. I can provide them these things if we receive toner for our printer.

My Students

The Achievement Gap is a literacy gap. My students engage on a daily bases with non fictional texts, many of which I provide them with. As they don't have individual textbooks, I print a lot of material for my students, material they can mark up and take home.

My principal calls my students his "bubble kids".

They're the students that are points shy of moving up a level on the FCAT, our statewide assessment given every year. If "moved" they will raise our school's "letter grade", a difference between an F, D, or C. And my students are well aware of that, as they are constantly reminded of this by my school and its administration every day. However, in my class, my students are just kids-kids with so much more than just the potential to move up a level on the FCAT. My students, as I tell them every day, will go to college, will succeed, and will change the future. They are my college-bound scientists. Unfortunately, my students face many challenges at home and at school. Many of my students lack a computer at home and are therefore unable to access their online textbook or any other online reading material when they leave my classroom, making it nearly impossible for reading or any studies to be done at home.

My Project

My school is unable to provide me toner and I have exhausted my personal resources. I can't continue to make copies at FedEx and I know in the end it would be far cheaper to purchase my own paper and toner and print off my own copies. Paper is doable, but I need assistance with toner. As silly as it is, I do believe this simple thing will make a difference in my classroom and in the lives of my children. With toner, I can provide students with copies printed from online workbooks and their online textbooks. I can provide students with material they can mark up and interact with and take home to complete studies individually. We have such little time in class and that time is cut short between FCAT preparation and testing. However, I know that my students would retain the material they learn in class and engage with nonfictional tests if they could continue their studies at home with their own personal worksheets and copies of their online textbook.

Donations to this project will move my students a step closer to having adequate supplies and reading materials necessary for their learning and will also without a doubt make it possible for my students to burst the bubble my principal and school have encased them in.
