Help us calculate! Were you ever the kid in class that was not even halfway through solving a math problem before the teacher was calling on someone to say the answer? My students' inability to quickly and accurately calculate prevents them from fully accessing the curriculum.

My students attend a large middle school in California.

While the class environment is very culturally diverse, they all have one characteristic in common. The students have gaps in their mathematical content knowledge which prevent them from achieving at grade level. Many of them are also dealing with other educational challenges such as a learning disability or a language barrier. Regardless of their current situation, most have the goal of attending some sort of higher education after high school.

My Project

The ability to quickly and accurately calculate is vital to higher level mathematics. Many of my students have never experienced many mathematical algorithms because they were so focused on trying to multiply or divide. Having calculators available for students use will allow me time during class to present students with multiple examples of a procedure and then give ample time for individual practice. The course focus can then shift from elementary standards to grade level standards. In addition, students will learn how technology can be correctly used as a resource to assist them.

As an educator, my ultimate goal is to prepare students to be successful in the future.

For some students that is helping them memorize multiplication facts, for others it is teaching them how to use technology to assist them. Calculators will allow students to focus on higher levels of mathematical processes instead of basic calculations.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
