This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I still remember reading this novel when I was 10 years old. My older brother was in the 7th grade, and he said, "Read this; it's a great book." I remember being mesmerized by the world of the Greasers and Socs. That's all it took to get me hooked on reading.

My school is considered a "high poverty" school.

Most of my students are not surrounded by literature and people who love to read. At our school we have a wonderful reading program where they have to read for 30 minutes a day and take tests on books to earn points. Many students fail this program because they do not like to read.

My Project

At our school, we have class sets of some novels, but nothing that engages the students like "The Outsiders." We used to have class sets of this novel to borrow, but over the years they have disappeared or have gotten worn out. I remember students getting hooked on reading, devouring anything by S.E. Hinton, starting to dress like the characters, and becoming totally absorbed in this novel. They will earn 7 points for their reading program, participate in lively discussions, create group projects, and fall in love with fictional characters that can teach real-life lessons.

In closing, if this project funded, it would provide years of inspiration and enrichment to a countless number of students.

Many of my students remark that they can't relate to "classic" books. This book manages to be a "classic" while relating to their lives with themes of friendship, gangs, love, and overcoming difficult obstacles.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
