My Students

Imagine you are a student with significant fine motor skill deficits or a severe reading, writing, or math disability who is trying to overcome these obstacles. With the many special education apps now available these students can increase success in those areas with materials currently unavailable.

The students in my classes are grades kindergarten through fifth grade and have a wide range of learning, cognitive, or physical disabilities.

Some struggle with academic areas through learning disabilities, others have Autism or are considered intellectually disabled, while others have fine and gross motor needs. A typical class consists of students with 3-5 different academic levels, receiving instruction at the same time. The applications available on tablet computers would allow me to better meet student specific needs and increase independence during work stations.

My Project

Applications such as "See.Touch.Learn" and "iComm" will allow students with Autism and intellectual disabilities learn to communicate effectively with peers, parents and people in the community. "Sentence Builder" and "Story Builder" will allow students to develop writing skills and build complete sentences, paragraphs and narratives. With state testing in this area, this application is a must have! "Math Monkey," "Fraction Monkey," and "Math Ninja" help children develop much needed math skills. The skills of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing are the base for learning how to exchange money, budget money and plan for future savings. There are too many wonderful applications to list, but you can see the many ways in which tablets can enrich classroom learning.

With state budget cuts in education funding, class sizes for pullout programs increasing and support staff (such as paraprofessionals and aids) being decreased, pull out program teachers are having to get creative with meeting the needs of students on varying levels (K-5 and in between) who are receiving instruction at the same time.

Tablets with educational apps would allow students to be work at their level independently while waiting for their turn of targeted instruction with the teacher.
