If You Teach A Child to Read, They'll Want to Write...
My students need 3 book organizers to store all the wonderful books we have, and they also need a cart so we have a place to put everything for writer's workshop.
"So please, oh PLEASE, we beg, we pray, Go throw your TV set away, And in its place you can install, A lovely bookshelf on the wall."— Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
We have a bookshelf, but need a way to organize our books and writer's workshop so my students can create their own stories.
My students are eager learners.
They come from all different backgrounds. I have students who speak English as a second language. Our school is also close to a military base so we do get some military students. Although they all have different backgrounds, they all come to second grade excited to learn and start reading chapter books. They love to write and read, and love to share with each other.
My Project
I am requesting 3 book organizers and a place to put everything for our writer's workshop. The morning time is my students' favorite time of day. They quickly finish their bell work and go to our bookshelf for a book to read.
They're becoming quite the readers and are able to read more than 1 picture book during this time. They go to put the book away, but don't remember where they got it from. I've began marking the books with where it belongs, but we need the bins so they are able to get them in easier.
We are also starting our writer's workshop and we'll be focusing on the ocean as a class. We need a place to store their work since we'll be writing about the ocean until the end of the year.
When we are done, we'll bind the writing into a large ocean book. This book is the highlight of past students' second grade experience. My students need a place to store their work and also be able to get new papers. I also want them to be able to write their own work and have a place to find the materials they need.
My students can tell me all about the TV show they watched the night before, but many don't remember what they read beyond the basics of the story.
I want them to enjoy books and be able to know where they found a book they loved so they can read it again.
I also want my students to be able to have a place to store their writing so it stays nice. Reading and writing go hand in hand. Once my students can read, they want to write. I want them to have a place to store both.
