Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My 4th grade students are struggling with writing. They see it as a burden and complain about creating anything. I have them write on topics that they care about, but they also have to write to topics that I give them. It is so important for my students to understand the value and importance of writing. Not only that but these students need to be encouraged to use their imagination. By having my students create fictional writing pieces I am accomplishing both of these things. I would like to be able to provide the students with a corner of our classroom library to display their books. In order to do this and have these materials last the students need access to a publishing corner. The students live in a very low-income area of Chicago which is riddled with gang violence and shootings. To counteract this I am trying to provide them with as many real and exciting experiences to be as productive as possible. To establish this publishing center I need to provide the students access to material that they can use to bind these books, so we can keep them and other students will be able to read them in years to come. They will also need lamination because to keep the pages from deteriorating. My students need to see that their writing matters. They will see it is important and be able to take pride in their words with the addition of these materials and a publishing center in our classroom.
