Most classroom libraries around the city are sparse and outdated. They house the same books throughout the grades and often the students are forced to read books they have already read, or choose the other disconcerting option: stop reading. My kids are eighth graders and are really excited about reading (thanks to a maxed out VISA :), but my library can't support their growing love of the written word. Our school doesn't have a library, so my classroom is most often their only source of books. There are so many wonderful books out there, with new, intriguing, fantastic, socially relevant titles coming out daily. I often check the new teen titles at Barnes and Noble and want to cry wishing that I could afford to buy all the books they would love. My goal to create a new "wing" for my library where my students can check out totally new texts was a success thanks to donorschoose. Thank you so much for your generosity! But we can't stop there! We are clearing out two adjoining rooms in our school and with the help of a generous architecture firm we are building a library! I hope to stock the library with the help of our kids. They'll pick out their favorites and do research on award-winning authors. The goal for students in our school is to become lifelong learners and the first step in creating minds like those is to spark their curiosity, their passions. Please help me to do that with the school's first library!
