Being a Scientist - Help our School's First Science Fair!

My students need supplies to test drinking water quality, including kits for measuring pH, water hardness, alkalinity, the amount of chlorine, and the amount of fluoride.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The best way to learn science is by doing! We need the materials to do our first science fair! My students have not had rich science experiences in the past due to limited access to materials and resources for hands-on labs and investigations to further their understanding of science concepts.

We are a first-year school and started the first day with empty classrooms without any science equipment.

We have slowly been able to borrow and beg materials from other schools, but many of the hands-on materials that our students need are unavailable and we do not have the funds to purchase them this year. Students love using the limited materials we do have and absolutely love lab days when they can dig into the content and can't wait for the fair! My students are eighth graders at a brand new charter school in California in a historically underserved area with high levels of poverty. Although our school is located on an old, run-down campus, we have been able to brighten our students' lives through a rigorous and relevant curriculum, hands-on learning experiences, and teachers who truly care for them and devote ourselves to getting our students to college. Our students have noticed the change in the culture of their campus and are excited for their future and achieving their goals.

My Project

These materials will allow my students to complete their first science fair together as a school. My students will be exploring the water quality on campus and comparing their results to store-bought water as well as the water from their house faucets. Students are very interested in their health and how things we can't even see can affect our bodies. We have already learned about dissolved ions in our Chemistry unit and students are very excited to explore this concept through this experiment. Many students think the water from the fountains at school tastes bad/different compared to their water at home and they want to know why. These materials will help support my students in building their understanding as well as excitement for investigation and experimentation. By purchasing large amounts of testing kits and materials, all students will be able to participate in the science fair and complete multiple trials to ensure accuracy of their results.

This project is very important as it is helping students in a school that is historically low-scoring in science, with only 14% of the students in the area with passing scores on the state test in science last year.

We have opened our school to give our students another option and they have already shown tremendous growth. These materials will put them one more step closer to achieving their dreams. My students want to score well on their exams, go to a great high school and can't wait for college!
