Nonfiction Reading Circles to Widen Worldviews

My students need 8 copies each of 8 engaging contemporary nonfiction books to deepen their understanding of rhetoric and controversial issues.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are what we read. Because our English department's book collection is mostly limited to classical canons, our students are familiar with Homer and Shakespeare, but the closest they come to contact with modern literature is 1954's "Lord of the Flies." They are hungry for new books!

My AP English Language students are from diverse backgrounds; many come from first-generation immigrant families, and many are economically disadvantaged.

They begin the year with varying skill sets. While some of them are avid and advanced readers, many are struggling with difficult college-level texts. Regardless, they share one thing in common--their relentless desire to hone their craft so they can be the first in their families to attend college.

My Project

By giving my students access to contemporary nonfiction like Malcolm Gladwell's "The Outliers" and Richard Rodriguez's "The Hunger of Memory," you'll provide them opportunities to grapple with relevant social, economic, and political issues in an environment that fosters collaboration, time management, and critical thinking. Students will each self-select a book from the list of 8 titles, form reading circles with 3 other students who have also chosen the same book, set a reading calendar to finish the book by my deadline, and engage in Socratic seminars in groups and with the whole class. Each reading circle will present their book to the class through a collaborative project that requires students to research a controversial topic addressed in their reading, the diverging views on the issue, and possible solutions as well as consequences. Students will complement their understanding by reading and analyzing poems, photographs, or other creative works that tackle the same topic

Technology cannot replace the tree of knowledge that lives in each book.

Though our school has no funding for new books, my students can reach for these trees through your generous help. In return, they will have a chance to grow their own gardens.
