My Students

Children need to see their future at a young age. Children need to be given the confidence to know they are college worthy, college going, and college bound. The book " C is for College " will get kids thinks about the college idea. Let's get the wheels spinning.

I am a librarian at a low income high school in Ky, and we have over 80% on free and reduced lunches.

The elementary school that we partner with also has the majority of the students coming from homes that the parents do not have a college education. These students will be first generation of college students. These students need all we can do to embed in them that a college degree is critical. We need to find a way to move students out of poverty and into the workforce to be contributing members of society.

My Project

A group of our high achieving high school students collaborate with a group of students from a neighboring elementary school with the desire to have an impact on the children's lives and help transform their potential for tomorrow. Our high school students are big brothers/big sisters that mentor younger students by reading, playing games, or just hanging out during scheduled field trips to a local elementary school. Our goal is to build a relationship between the students and the older students can help build a perspective of what working hard in school can offer. We like our students to promote good grades, staying in school, and having the goal to go to college. During one of the field trips we would like each student to receive a copy of the book "C is for College". The high school mentors will read the books with their little brothers/sisters and then present the book to the students which they can keep as their own and share with others.

Children need to think about their future beginning at a young age and the book "C is for College" is a great tool to get them thinking in the right direction.

This donation will make it possible to provide one whole class with a great book that I think needs to be in every elementary school across America.
