Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am one of the Speech Language Pathologists at P.S. 11 Queens. I service approximately 50 students in grades kindergarten through sixth. The majority of my students are classified as having a learning disability or a speech and language impairment. The students consistently work on activities that help them succeed in the classroom setting, as well as in everyday situations with their peers, teachers, and family. Some skills that they continuously target include, but are not limited to the following: word retrieval, memory, building vocabulary, identifying the main idea, predicting, making inferences, drawing conclusions, summarizing, identifying irrelevant information, figurative language, sequencing, spatial/temporal/quantitative concepts, sentence structure, and morphological markers. As a result, their ability in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as their overall thinking skills is showing improvement and these skills are shown in the classroom setting. I want my students to feel "extra" rewarded for their great efforts and achievements. I would like to provide them with fun, interactive games that they can use in the speech and language setting, as well as in their home environments that will further enrich their language skills. I have chosen some classic and newer board games as well as other traditional games. The games that I have selected include, Boggle, Scrabble, Articulate, Guess Who, Memory, Twister, Pictionary, Blokus, Connect Four, Rummikub, Checkers, Clue, Sorry, Chutes & Ladders, The Game of Life, Monopoly, Candy Land, Jenga, Popomatic Trouble, Uno, Perfection, Yahtzee, Wordigo, Dominoes, Don't Break the Ice, Hungry Hungry Hippos, Cootie, Hi-Ho Cherry O, Mall Madness, and I-Spy. I still love playing games to this day. I never realized how helpful they were to me in developing my language and thinking skills until I completed a Master's program in Speech Language Pathology. I want my students to be able to share in a similar experience and have a love for board games as well as spending quality time with their family and peers.
