Life's A Ball

My students need 16 stability ball chairs to use as seats in our classroom.

My Students

Who hasn't balanced on two of the four legs of their chair in an attempt to build core strength, risk their life, or defy gravity and their teacher? We've all done it. They still do it! Most of our students are "wired" for movement. Why not encourage them to move?

My students are first graders in a rural Wisconsin school.

Our school totals 89 students in grades K through 3. There are 16 children in our first grade classroom, 11 girls and 5 boys. There is an energy in our room that is exciting and contagious! Our favorite subjects are recess, physical education, music, reading and math, in that order. When given a choice, we choose math games or reading with friends. Throughout the day there are many opportunities for movement, changing location, and modifying positions for learning. We love to wiggle! Many children in our classroom like to kneel as they work. Some enjoy standing. Most cannot resist the desire to tip back onto two, or even one leg of their chair and hover in that position. Sitting "still" is a very challenging task when you're six or seven years old.

My Project

I am requesting a total of 16 stability ball chairs so that each child in the first grade will have opportunity to use a ball as their primary seat. I am requesting two different sizes of chair. Most children will require the 21 inch ball, but I am also requesting four 18 inch balls so that even our smallest first graders will have a comfortable seat. The balls each have 6 udder-like "legs" on the bottom of them so that there are not stability balls rolling all over the classroom. Research has shown that the stability chairs that are being requested allow children to engage their body's core muscles continually. This physical engagement has shown to increase time on task for all children, not only those with attention issues. The continual minute movements help to safely satisfy each child's need to wiggle and defy gravity.

I have been a teacher of primary grades for 18 years.

In the past 3-5 years I have noticed that an increasing number of children need the stimulation of movement in order to do their best work. It may be a result of fewer minutes of Physical Education each week, less recess time each day or more sedentary lives at home. Regardless, I believe that the use of creative seating options like a stability ball could and will produce results in many of the children I love and serve each day.
