Form And Function In Biology

My students need a lab component to understand the Big Theme of "Form and Function."

My Students

My students are finding a river exploration project we are doing in biology deeply educational. While the concept of "form follows function" makes sense as we study adaptations of local flora and fauna in the river, my students have difficulty understanding the larger implications.

Our school is a public arts school.

My students have a natural proclivity for relating to the design of the world. The theme we are building this year's class around is "form follows function." Having a lab-based set of activities would deepen their love of nature and effect how they see the world.

My Project

Carolina has designed a set of activities for viewing physiological similarities in different species. For example, all organisms reproduce, but it will helpful to my students to explore different strategies of reproduction. I am interested to teach them some of the microscopic structures that are similar in different organisms.

While my students are successfully relating the ideas that we are learning at the river to class discussions, it is important to me that they understand that the arrangement of molecules and cells and other parts of life that cannot be seen with the naked eye are also part of a complex system.

Learning happens in science when students are captivated by wonder. This set of activities will allow them to see some remarkable adaptations.
