Roots of Democracy

My students need an e-tablet to research topics in American History and shoot video journals to help grow our "Roots of Democracy" classroom tree.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

'One of the greatest and simplest tools for learning more and growing is doing more', said Washington Irving. My 8th graders are transforming their American History curriculum into a dynamic, illustrated history of the USA, which they will create in class and shared online.

My 8th graders love to have fun.

The more they laugh, the more they learn. A traditional public middle school in southern California is our home base. Nearly all my students are English Learners. In addition, each student has been identified with mild learning disabilities: autism spectrum disorders, visual, auditory, attention, etc. Yes, they all struggle to learn, but they struggle less when it's fun. A good example can be seen in a video done when they were 6th graders, 'Irving State of Mind.' It's on vimeo.com and youtube. We did it to show off our school. As a teacher, it's important to me to show how much the special education population has to contribute.

My Project

Your gift will allow students access to an electronic tablet. After fighting over who gets to use it first, they will research topics, make video and audio clips of each other telling their story of US History, and learn to edit their words and pictures into a condensed (approx. 5 minute) multi-media clip that you can watch, enjoy and be proud to have helped make possible.

In a way, you will be involved in the creation of an informed electorate.

Your support will help motivate students from diverse cultural, linguistic and ability backgrounds to become engaged in and knowledgeable about US History, and recognize that they are each an important part of it.
