My Students

Do you love to read? Do you realize how much work it takes to become a reader? My first graders are in the midst of that hard work every day, and they deserve for it to be fun, meaningful, and rewarding!

My students attend a Title I school in a low-income neighborhood.

They often come from homes that have limited resources, including time to spend with other, fluent readers. My students love to explore books and listen to stories, but are working hard to unlock that next level of being able to read books on their own!

My Project

Imagine you are six years old. You are in a first grade classroom where your teacher is working with small groups on specific reading skills. Are you sitting at your desk doing a worksheet? NO! Are you flipping through pages of books that you like to look at but cannot yet read? Maybe, but what if you could go write words that you know on a markerboard, and then practice words that you were working on? What if you could go listen to your favorite fairy tale with your friends? What if you could build words to match picture cards with magnetic letters? What if you could play with letters to create new words? What if you, a first grade learner, had the choice and the ownership of your own learning as you discover your path to being a reader? My students need headphones to listen to stories on Cd's, magnetic letters, word builders, CVC Word work centers, dry erase markers, and read along books to increase their learning and on task behavior.

Please help me turn these What If's?

into We Can's. The only thing more powerful than the ability to read is the desire to strengthen and develop this skill. Many of us don't remember the struggles, but it is not an easy path for all students. Thank you for viewing our project!
