Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember sitting on the classroom rug for story time? Well, in our classroom, our rug is used not only for reading together but for a variety of learning activities throughout the day! Unfortunately, this rug is very old and worn out. It would be so nice for the kids to have a nice, new rug.

Our school is located in a low-income community.

Parents work hard and sometimes juggle two jobs to make ends meet. Finding time to go to the library can be challenging for many families. Our classroom collection of books is substantial which delights my students...Our rug is the preferred (and only) place to pick a book and read alone or with a friend! And that is precisely what they would choose to do as an independent activity once their work is done! My students love to read. My fast readers love to help others with their fluency. Friends love to read books together. My chapter book readers love to get lost in a long story and cannot wait until they can pick up the book again. They truly have the love of reading! I am one proud teacher!

My Project

Yes, the rug is the heart of our library. It is also where we have our morning meetings to set the tone for the day, discuss the tasks ahead and make announcements. It is a place to discover new learning and boards games during Free Time. It also turns into our "discussion forum" when we read holiday books or stories related to our current unit. Finally, where do we meet at the end of our busy day to reflect on the day and talk about the next? Of course,on our old classroom rug! The children and I would really appreciate having a new rug which is a comfortable place to conduct all of the activities mentioned above.

It is more than a rug.

It is a meeting place used throughout the day as part of our classroom routine. I believe that my students deserve to sit, meet, and read on a clean, new and safe rug.
