This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I use my Smartboard daily in the course of my teaching. I have been using the same antiquated LCD projector for over 7 years. The "replace bulb indicator" is on. It can cost up to $200 to replace the bulb due to the old technology. This is half the cost of a new projector.

Our high school is currently a Title I school, therefore many of our students come from low income households.

We also have a very diverse population. With all of the diversity, there is one common thread. Our math scores are very poor. One of my math classes consists of students who have failed Algebra class at least once before. Most of them are totally unmotivated and have poor math skills. My other math classes are more motivated, but they also have poor math skills. When it comes to math, they have had limited success in their previous classes. Some of my students never passed a math class in their middle school. Once they arrive in high school, math teachers have to find creative ways to remediate their basic math skills and at the same time teach them the new skills that are required by the state standards. Having the LCD projector helps me to keep students engaged in the lectures. Simply writing on the whiteboard is not enough to keep today's student engaged.

My Project

Upgrading my LCD projector will ensure that I will be able to continue to utilize the Smartboard to present my lessons. There is no extra money for replacing old equipment because of the recent budget cuts. We have been told that there will probably be significant budget cuts for next year. If I have to resort back to just markers and whiteboard, the effectiveness of my lessons will be greatly diminished.

There is a limited amount of LCD projectors on campus.

If and when my LCD project becomes inoperable, there is no place where I can borrow one, and there will be no funds for me to purchase a new one.
