Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some of us remember having someone read to us or tell us a story as children. My students lack this wonderful experience.

My students are a group of second graders who are still learning to become fluent readers.

Most of my students are still acquiring English. Many of them lack books at home, or don’t have anyone to read to them. Our school is a Title 1 school with over 80% receiving free or reduced lunches. Therefore, poverty is also an issue that they face. Each day they work hard to obtain the necessary skills of reading. My students are eager to learn and are excited about coming to school. I want to continue building on their enthusiasm for learning to read.

My Project

Children take great pleasure in listening to stories, a listening center would give them this pleasure. Listening to stories read will aid those students who need multi-sensory experience to learn. Listening to a book read aloud will allow them to see the words come to life. Having a model of a fluent reader is essential when acquiring spoken language and reading fluency. Reading occurs in a sequence of skills, first we listen, next we speak, followed by reading. The stories give excellent examples of language structure and illustrate the story elements. Literature provides the richness of language that my students need. My students will experience reading as a source of pleasure rather than a skill, and will make my students eager to learn how to read. My students would use the listening center while I am working in small groups with other students during our language arts workshop time.

I can teach reading fundamentals but I have to inspire the love of reading to my students.

The listening center will be one resource that will enrich their experience with literature.
