Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a very low socioeconomic background and never get a chance to work with new technology. In fact, most do not have computers at home. I believe in giving everyone an opportunity to experience reading a book via electronic medium. This will open their eyes and minds.

I have 27 very low performing students with diverse backgrounds.

Most have experienced foster care at some point in their lives. I also work with students with specific learning disabilities. I believe technology will be a very useful tool for them. Most of my students have no exposure to technology outside of school because they have no computers nor cable. Having these experiences in the school they attend can make the difference between a successful student and a future drop-out. My students deserve a chance to compete globally with other students who have the benefits of computers and Internet access.

My Project

I work with small groups in my class on a regular basis. I am always searching for ideas that will motivate them to read and become engaged in reading. I am hoping to be able to receive these e-readers to incorporate them in my small group activities. The flexibility that they will provide will be very helpful. I can't wait to see their faces when they arrive in the classroom. Imagine their delight when they learn all the books they have access to! We know that most kids will jump at a chance to "play" with a hand-held device. Usually it's to play video games, but I believe that they will be delighted to know that they will be able to read books on them. I know that they will become much more engaged and will be eager to read with the e-reader.

I am my students' number one advocate and I try to provide them with a rich educational experience.

I believe technology will offer an added dimension to their journey through the educational system. One great limitation they suffer with is the lack of access to the Internet at home. This prevents them from being able to do any kind of research at home for any subject. Technology should not be denied them because they are economically disadvantaged. I look forward to providing these for them.
