Atoms, Atoms Everywhere...

My students need atomic models in order to visualize the structure of an atom in a hands-on and concrete manner.

Ms. Hashim Rosedale Middle School
Bakersfield, CA Grades 6-8

My Students

Students in 8th grade science class are often shocked to learn that the atom is the smallest unit of matter. More so, they have great difficulty with the idea that everything is made of atoms! Using an atomic model is a wonderful way to learn about the basic parts and structure of an atom.

My school is located in California.

My 8th grade science students come from diverse backgrounds and different ethnicities and have so much to share with the world! Some have very difficult socio-economic issues to overcome as well as academic difficulties. Our school strives to hold students to high standards and help students achieve their goals. My students love to learn and inquire about the world around them!

My Project

Atomic models are the very best way to introduce the basic structure of an atom at nearly any grade level. Because this is their first real concentrated look at atomic structure, my 8th grade science students often have trouble visualizing where the parts of an atom are located. The Bright Atom Model allows students to manipulate the protons, neutrons, and electrons to create Bohr atomic models for any atom up to 30 protons. In addition, they can create ions and simulate the ionic bonding process as well as the covalent bonding process with valence electrons. Students can also make isotopes of elements and compare atoms and the number of neutrons in each nucleus. Our state standards require students to know the structure of the atom, bonding processes, and structure of isotopes, and these models in their hands will ensure they have the best opportunity to understand atoms in depth.

Atomic models have assisted students and scientists alike in visualizing the structure of matter.

Hands-on activities are the best way to access tactile and visual modalities for all students. Practicing atomic modeling will give my students an unbeatable way to not only learn about the structure of an atom, but how atoms interact with each other.
