Building Young Minds with LEGO bricks! One Brick at a Time!

My students need LEGO bricks, coordinating bases and a storage bin to assist in learning mathematical concepts and provide a creative outlet for interpretation of text.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you had an Ah-Ha moment in school? For some students they are few and far between, but our students are hoping to create more of them in our classroom by using materials that all students enjoy... LEGOs!

My students live and work in a suburban, multicultural environment.

Our town is in Northern New Jersey, a short ride from New York City. As with most fourth graders, my students are curious and energetic when interacting with lessons.

My Project

What child does not like playing with LEGO bricks? And what educator does not want to use that excitement to reinforce concepts taught in class? At a recent NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) Regional Conference, I was introduced to the use of LEGO bricks in teaching area and perimeter in addition to using LEGO bricks to reinforce comprehension strategies with a novel-based reading program! These two areas were just a small representation of all the mathematical concepts that can be taught with LEGO bricks. I want my students to have the experience of using concrete, hands-on, everyday materials of interest to enhance their learning of mathematical concepts. Have fun AND learn too? No one can argue with that~

With your support, I will be able to bring the abstract to life for my students by providing a hands-on, creative and exciting avenue for learning...one brick at a time!
