Listening Center for Literature

My students need a listening center, plus Dr. Seuss and some classics on CD. They also need drums and bells, to go along with the music that helps them learn. My students are blind and learn mainly though what they hear.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are Blind and Visually Impaired. My students learn though listening, touching and experiencing the world in ways not using their eyesight. They enjoy music and rhymes very much and they will often learn basic information though song and story.

Students attend the only regional school for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Most of them are also from low income families. Many of them do not have access to good literature at home because books in Braille are rare and expensive, as are books on tape and the players to play them. My students need to have the experience of having good literature read to them. They also need to have a book in Braille to follow along with their hands.

My Project

My students need a listening center for nursery rhymes and literature. They also need drums and bells, to go along with the music that helps them learn. Students will be able to have stories read to them while they follow along in a book that has been transcribed into Braille. (I will place Braille pages over the pictures in the books, a process is called Braille-on.) It requires the teacher to use a special paper and transcribe the words in the books into Braille and then stick it over the pictures in the book. In this way a blind student can read the text with their hands in Braille and a sighted person can still use the book and read along with the student.) The teacher will be able to help the child with placing their hands properly over the Braille words while the CD/tape player reads aloud the story. I'm also requesting musical instruments for my students to use for nursery rhymes. Our students learn though repetition and they remember words better when they learn them through music. Songs reinforce the literature concepts learned though reading and are another way to learn basic literature skills.

Your donation will help to expose students to good literature while practicing their Braille reading skills.

It will also allow us to explore nursery rhymes and music while the children will be involved though the use of the musical instruments.
