My Students

My autistic support class is hooked on the Hunger Games. We are reading the first book in class and want to continue to engage our appetite with the next two books in the trilogy. The principal has even agreed to buy tickets for the release of the Hunger Games movie if we finish in time!

Each of my students bring unique gifts to our classroom.

With their intricate personalities and bold smiles, they bring so much light to our classroom. They are insightful and inquisitive and capture my heart on the daily. Attending a Title 1 school in Philadelphia means that resources are low. While our school has been able to provide our students each with a copy the first book of the series, we are without the next two in the trilogy. This book has captured my students imaginations--sometimes too much! I often have to redirect students to their current task, when they sneak off to read their book during other classroom activities.

My Project

While my students with Autism struggle with learning variations and nuances inherently found with a diagnosis of Autism, they are completely engrossed during our reading group time! Their engrossment has allowed me to focus on several levels of cognitive development, such as comprehension, analysis, and critical thinking. As an educator, my goal is to use their interest and strengths as a catalyst to skill development and a sense of empowerment. Having the second and the third book of this trilogy will allow us to continue to to harness their interest and work to build on what we have already gained.

When one of my students presents an interest in something, I do everything to ensure that interest is indulged.

I must ensure that I utilize the strengths of my students to circumvent their learning variations. The interest in this novel has sparked a level of motivation that I need to harness. Please support our students by providing us with the resources to actively engage and immerse their thinking.
