My Students

Do you remember the first time you read a book all by yourself? I want my students to build a love for reading that will last a lifetime.

My students are inner city children that attend a charter school.

They are loving and very curious about the world around them. My class is usually twenty students that is an equal mix of boys and girls. Most come from poverty, but are smart and so excited about attending school.

My Project

I teach kindergarten and for most of my students I am the first teacher they have had. One of my major goals for their first year is to instill a love of reading and books. I read to them daily and we take monthly trips to the public library for them to choose books for themselves. I have been blessed by generous donors in a previous project and now have 11 TAG readers in my classroom and they are wildly popular. The TAG reader allows them to have the book read to them and it utilizes head phones so they have privacy. I would like to have a more diverse library of TAG books for them to choose from and hope that this project will provide that for them. I feel that having these items available to them will give them a huge jump in learning to read on their own.

Most of my students come from economically challenged households, and they have not been exposed to some of the technology that is available.

My students get really excited about technology and use it whenever it is available. I would love to have these TAG books to provide them a variety of titles to read.
