My students need 28 books relating to the Science and Social Studies content areas, along with a carpet that will help provide a safe and comfortable reading environment.

My Students

My classroom is about 95% African American, and most receive free lunch based on their familyâs income. Many come from single-parent homes, and have little to no exposure to the world beyond their neighborhoods. In addition, about 33% of my students receive special education services.

As you can see, the challenges that my students face each day are great even before entering the classroom.

Many of my students are reading significantly below grade level and feel discouraged (and sometimes even defeated) when it comes to reading. My goal is to help them develop greater ability to decode words and comprehend, and furthermore, help instill in them a great passion for reading.

My Project

My students need high-interest reading material to help engage them as readers; the more exposure to books and language, the better their reading abilities become! Science and Social Studies book will help reinforce what they are learning across the curriculum. In addition, a carpet on which the students can relax and read a book will help make for a more comfortable, inviting reading area.

Poverty and other social obstacles make our studentsâ lives very difficult, and these materials are designed to counter those obstacles and make life and learning easier.

Others may say we are at-risk, but, with your help, I say let us be âat-riskâ of success!
