This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a high poverty area where 91% of the population receives free or reduced breakfast and lunch.

Our students also receive a free fruit or vegetable snack daily, and many participate in our weekend food backpack program where they are provided with food for the weekend. The socioeconomic level is so low that many of our students rely on the school for their daily meals. Our children come from a wide variety of home structures: nuclear, multiple-family, migrant, foster, group, and military, to name a few. Our students are so consumed with concern about basic needs that they often lose sight of the adventure and education that books can provide

My Project

As the school librarian, I am requesting approximately 20 series and high interest picture books that also have mathematics components integrated within the story line. I feel that if students are excited about reading a good book, then the content that they are gaining from reading is just as important as the story itself. These books are fun, yet highly educational, and geared towards Mathematics. Many of the titles requested, such as Series of Unfortunate Events, Llama Llama, and Dr. Seuss contain rhyme schemes and events that can be placed in patterns and counted. The titles Math Attack, The Grapes of Math, and A Very Improbable Story revolve entirely around math concepts. Every book contains a mathematics component. I have included books that all students, grades Kindergarten through Sixth would enjoy reading. I hope that by providing these types of books to our students they will be more likely to read and become more interested in the application of every day math concepts.

These books would be a great addition to our library because they will serve a dual purpose: literary entertainment and mathematics education.

Our students need more exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and by finding good literature to promote these concepts, students will become more aware of the equations that surround them in every day life.
