What A RELIEF! Printmaking In The Art Room!

My students need printmaking supplies, such as ink, paper, linoleum blocks and a printing press, to learn the relief process of printmaking.

My Students

Every student deserves the chance to try new materials in the art classroom! My students need to learn to appreciate all different types of art, and we would like to move on to something other than pencil and paper. Printmaking is a wonderful way to bring new ideas into the classroom.

I teach art to 200 middle school students in Maryland.

Our school has been restructured and the last two years and my students have been striving to bring up their test scores and grades! We bring math, science, reading, writing and history into the art classroom all year long and are truly a cross-curricular class. They are extremely curious students and are very interested in new ideas.

My Project

The majority of my students have very limited access to art outside of the classroom. During a class trip to the local art museum, I realized it was the first time visiting an art museum for many of the students. I truly believe there is an art medium that will interest every student in my classroom. This would be the first time my students will be introduced to printmaking techniques and I would have the opportunity to engage students who have not felt successful in other art materials. My students need printmaking supplies such as ink, paper, linoleum blocks and a printing press to learn the relief process of printmaking. These supplies would allow them to create linolumn printing plates, which they can use to create a series of complex prints. Students would have the opportunity to use high level thinking skills to design, create and print. The press would be an excellent addition to our classroom because we can use it for different types of printmaking and it will last for years.

I would love to create an appreciation of art to every single student I teach, and to be able to bring new techniques like printmaking into the classroom would engage my students in a new art making technique.

To bring a high school level art technique to middle school level students would help their critical thinking skills and help them prepare for higher level projects.
